Marikina, located in the Philippines' National Capital Region, is a first-class, highly urbanized metropolis. Because of its renowned shoe manufacturing, Marikina is referred to as the "Shoe Capital of the Philippines". With about 70% of shoes created in the Philippines coming from this production facility, it is the largest shoe producer in the nation. The shoe museum and the Philippine International Footwear Center are located in the city, and inside are the notorious shoe collection of former first lady Imelda Marcos, who was the wife of the late dictator, kleptocrat, and president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos.
